So now that my littlest one is eating baby food, it has left me wondering, just what do you do with all of those little glass jars? Now I certainly wouldn’t win the Environmentalist Award of the year (is that even an award?), but I’d like to say that I contribute somewhat by recycling. Yes, I could easily just put the jars in the recycle bin every week and pat myself on the back for doing my part, but I keep hearing a little voice in my head that says REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCYLE. Hmmm, recycle is the LAST of the 3 R’s. Although it’s certainly better than tossing the many jars in the trash, I know there’s got to be more that I can do.
The first R is reduce. How can I reduce the amount of the glass jars that I use? That’s easy- make my own baby food! Well, maybe not that easy. Let’s use carrots as an example. I know the basic idea is to cook it well until it’s soft, then add some water and puree it. Okay, it does sound easy, but maybe inconvenient is a better word to describe it. Since I have pretty much ruled out the first R and the last R, that leaves re-use.
After staring blankly at my computer screen for about a month trying to come up with a fabulous list to pass on, I stumbled upon a site that has several uses for baby food jars. Since I had only come up with two ideas on my own, I was thrilled to have a nice, long list to share. Go to http://www.abchomepreschool.com/Crafts/BabyFoodJarCrafts.htm for some great ideas on how to re-use those baby food jars!
Although I have decorated a few jars and plan to turn them into candle holders, I have yet to try any of the ideas, so it looks like a follow-up post will be due.
I’d still love to hear from you! Have an idea on how to re-use baby food jars? Have you tried any of these? Share your tips by posting a comment!
